The Niger Delta Youth Congress (NDYC) has issued a strongly-worded statement rejecting Amnesty International’s recent report claiming over 10,217 Nigerians were killed in the past two years under the current administration. The organization, led by National Coordinator Comrade Israel Uwejeyan, characterized the May 29, 2025 Amnesty International press release as containing “unverified data, outrageous exaggerations, and politically motivated narratives.”
The NDYC’s primary contention centers on what it describes as Amnesty International’s alleged bias against the Nigerian state and its use of unsubstantiated casualty figures. The organization specifically challenged claims that 6,896 people were killed in Benue state and 2,630 in Plateau within two years, describing these statistics as “statistically ridiculous” and lacking proper verification methods.
The youth congress argued that Amnesty International operates with ulterior motives beyond human rights advocacy, drawing parallels to former U.S. President Trump’s allegations about international organizations being used to destabilize African nations. The NDYC maintained that the report ignores the Nigerian government’s ongoing security efforts, including counter-insurgency operations, community stabilization programs, and infrastructure investments under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.
The organization demanded that Amnesty International retract the report and issue a public apology, while calling on Nigerians to reject what it termed “foreign propaganda.” The NDYC positioned its response as defending Nigeria’s sovereignty against external interference, emphasizing the need for internally-driven solutions to the country’s security challenges rather than what it characterized as destructive foreign narratives.
